THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake does the light gun classic an awful injustice. This re-release would make even Dr. Curien quiver in horror, from the pop-in to the loading times to the faulty control scheme.

With the release of MegaPixel Studio and Forever Entertainment’s THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake, the Curien Mansion reopens its doors once again. Its shambling zombies are no doubt recognizable to 90s youth, but should the past be forgotten?

REVISION OF THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD

The narrative of THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake is barely deep enough to get the job done, with roots stretching back to the arcade and SEGA Saturn. As Thomas Rogan or Agent G, players must battle zombies, frogs, and other nocturnal creatures in order to foil Dr. Curien’s diabolical scheme.

However, there is one factor that will give these two the upper hand: firepower. Players may blast down attackers with infinite ammunition in this lightgun shooter, reloading when rounds run out. Shoot at the weak spot, move quickly, and try to stay alive. Oh, and if you can, try to rescue the scientific captives.

It’s not a really challenging title, and it can be completed in around 40 minutes. There are a few things, though, that will keep gamers blasting away. There are numerous endings, several pathways, and the opportunity to pick up some great weapons (including our personal favorite, the grenade launcher). Still, if you’re hoping for something more substantial, keep in mind that this game caters to a very certain sort of player. There’s a horde mode, an impeachment system, and a monster gallery to unlock, but don’t anticipate a massive epic.

The original was a cult favourite for a reason, but the team couldn’t quite recreate the same atmosphere on the Nintendo Switch. It’s not through a want of trying: there’s a single Joy-Con mode, the option to aim with the left or right analog stick, and even the ability to utilize the system’s gyroscope. Nothing, however, compares to the sensation of firing a lightgun, making the whole experience seem a little lost in translation.

Unfortunately, this is hardly THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake’s worst flaw; the film’s entire aesthetic is a poor replica of the original. For starters, the revamped visuals are a big degradation; the low poly aesthetic of the 1996 original was charming, but the remake strips the proceedings of any flair.

It was presented with a glaring lack of effort. The game’s drab, washed-out aesthetic, early Xbox 360 Unity asset characters, and pop-in make it seem more like a student effort than a classic recreation. Long loading times are also present, which is something that a fast-paced action game should never, ever do. Even the music has been modified to something that sounds more like a funky mix you’d hear at a Spirit Halloween shop, which is a strange decision.

The sixth edition in the LEGO series, Traveller’s Tales, is one of the most expansive LEGO Star Wars experiences to date. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has everything you’d want in a Star Wars game, including over 20 planets from all three trilogies, over 300 unlocked characters, and nine movies to play through, but the LEGO games’ basic design isn’t for everyone.
