Star Citizen is one of the most anticipated PC games ever made will be available for download in 2016. The video above, produced by Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) and The Gamers Challenge (TGC), offers a look at the often-maligned dynamic loot generation system being added to Star Citizen, the crowd-funded space-sim game produced by CIG. The system, which is currently in development and has been in the works for almost a year, is designed to create more diverse loot-based gameplay, forcing players to keep track of their inventory and how it changes as they play.. After a quarterly break, Star Citizen is back with its newest Inside Star Citizen video, and this one is all about loot, which wasn’t a feature in the game’s alpha until now.

CIG is working on a loot creation technology that will allow developers to create places loaded with dynamically produced treasure all throughout the game’s world. These places are created using a “loot archetype” system, which allows developers to create a list of item tags to include or exclude from a location’s loot pool on the fly. Each tag type may also be given a “weight” that determines the likelihood of an item being discovered. This system will eventually be connected to the Quantum background simulation, with loot container contents altering in response to local events.

The system is presently under internal testing, with a tentative release date of later this year. It currently only includes weapon and armor loot items, but the developers are working on extending it to include more.

The second half of the video is a “Oops! All VFX edition” of a sprint report, featuring a new look at thruster dust generation technology, piled debris such as cherry blossom leaves being disturbed by player feet, hit sparks flying away from ship surfaces, improved lightning effects, and a “cinematic” look at fire propagation. 0d1ZpRc

Long-time MMORPG fans may recall that Star Citizen was initially Kickstarted in 2012 for almost $2 million, with a 2014 release date anticipated. It is still in an unfinished but playable alpha as of 2021, after raising approximately $350 million from players via years of ongoing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is now the most crowdfunded video game ever, and it has been met with unwavering support from fans and skepticism from detractors. Squadron 42, a co-developed single-player game, has also been frequently postponed.
