The Pokemon Unite mobile game has finally arrived. But while the title brings together popular characters from the entire Pokemon franchise, it has gotten a lot of flak for its so-called “gacha” monetization model, which uses randomized loot boxes to provide players with the very best in-game characters as they level up.

You’ve heard of Pokemon Go. You’ve heard of Super Mario Run. But what about a game that merges the first two?

Given the latest Nintendo 3DS stuff and Pokemon-related news, this week’s edition of “This Week in Video Games” is all about Pokemon.

Pokemon Unite is Nintendo’s first foray into the MOBA genre, and it’s gotten a lot of positive feedback. This is a 5v5 fight with MOBA-lite features, and the key to it all is the 10-minute match duration, making it a very simple game to get in and out of. The Pokemon series has been screaming for a fight system upgrade, and considering that Pokemon Unite is free to play, The Pokemon Company and Nintendo may have just discovered a rare gem of a game.

Unite was originally announced back in 2020, amongst all of the other announcements with Pokemon’s anniversary information. Fans initially seemed concerned, given everyone wanted the Diamond & Pearl remake (which did eventually get announced). Pokemon Unite has been developed in partnership with Tencent and TiMi Studios, and you can certainly see their expertise on display with the free-to-play mechanics. Now that the game has come out there’s a high level of polish on the game and it’s actually very fun, and the barrier to entry with the game being free, plus the HUGE popularity of the Pokemon franchise could add up to a very bright future for the game.

When you initially start the game, you create a Trainer character and then go through the tutorial to get right into the action. You learn the game’s rules, which are basically a mini-MOBA in which you level up your Pokemon by fighting other Wild Pokemon in the arena, collecting Pokeballs that fall, and then dunking them into goals to gain points. It’s a 5v5 game, with the winning side being the one with the most points at the conclusion of the ten-minute time restriction.

Let’s define MOBAs for those who aren’t acquainted with the term. Multiplayer online battle arenas are a type of strategy video games in which two teams of players fight on a battlefield against each other. Each player is in charge of a single character with a unique set of skills that develop through time and contribute to the team’s overall plan. Each team’s ultimate goal is to demolish their opponent’s main building, which is situated on the other side of the battlefield. League of Legends, Dota 2, and Heroes of the Storm are all popular games in this genre. Within a ten-minute time restriction, Pokemon Unite does an excellent job at reducing the rules and keeping things simple.

Unite was inspired by the MOBA structure, yet Pokemon are already well-suited to this kind of game. When you initially begin outmatches, you will be in the Pokemon’s original form, such as a little Charmander, and as you advance and earn points, you will level up and evolve into a new version of your Pokemon, such as Charizard.

Battles against computer-generated ‘wild pokemon’ and human opponents provide for an excellent mix that feels extremely realistic. You’ll start with a normal attack, then advance to two more special attacks, and finally an ultimate attack that does the most damage to your opponents. This in-game development adds to the excitement of the game, as you attempt to collect as many points as possible to level up as quickly as possible while also taking out your opponents.

The map is divided into two lanes, one at the top and one at the bottom. When you first start off, you’ll divide your squad into two and attempt to collect points so you can slam some goals and level up your Pokemon. If you come across other human opponents, they will attempt to take you out, and if they succeed, or if you succeed, you will erase their saved points, preventing them from obtaining an edge. There’s nothing quite like knocking out an opponent with around 20-30 points on the board. If you are knocked out, you will have to return to your starting location on the map, which will take some time. If you take a few hits, you’ll want to retreat to recover some health, which you may accomplish by picking up healing objects around the map or resting in your objective, which will gradually restore HP.

As you advance through the game, a strong Pokemon will appear on the map, worth a lot more points, and if you can team up and defeat it, you’ll have a significant edge over the opposing team. You fight until the countdown runs out, and I’ve also seen a couple teams give up and raise the white flag.

It can’t be overstated how much fun this is. We’ve been pushing GameFreak to enhance the combat system for a long time, but they keep releasing the same type of Pokemon mainline series game. When Pokemon Go was initially launched, it took the globe by storm, and this game has the potential to do the same since it combines the Pokemon brand with the competitive aspect of a MOBA. The fights feel fantastic, it’s simple to pick up, and it’s likely to appeal to both younger and older Pokemon fans who have grown up with the franchise and have played other MOBAs.

It’s not as severe as other MOBAs like League of Legends or Dota 2, which have a reputation for being very toxic until you reach the top levels. I haven’t personally encountered this toxicity, but I believe it is well recognized and understood at this time. At the present, players are unable to communicate in-game, and matching is fast, uncomplicated, and straightforward. Given the simple nature of the first few games, I think teams are likely to be populated with bots in the early stages of the game, but this will likely alter as you go to ranked modes.

Pokemon Unite has a great practice mode that enables you to play as any Pokemon in the roster to get you ready for the action. You must own and unlock characters in the normal team-based modes, which you may accomplish by playing the game and purchasing Pokemon from the in-game shop. There are a lot of micro-transactions in this free-to-play game, but you don’t have to engage with them if you don’t want to.

Unite has a depth to it that I like. Rather than the same old principles of Game Freak Pokemon games, fights here may vary from simple to very difficult, depending on who you’re playing. You may unlock up to 16 held items, which will help you improve your Pokemon’s stats in battle and help you win more battles. Unite’s customization is also quite extensive. You may unlock clothing pieces and various styles for your trainer, for example. Holowear is the Pokemon Unite equivalent of skins, which works as a digital projection on the Pokemon to alter their look. There are traditional and outlandish costumes, as well as a variety of styles to spice it up and really customize your Pokemon.

There’s a battle pass with 90 levels that’s also free. As with most free-to-play games, there is a paid premium edition, but the free version includes a number of cosmetic goods that enable you to customize your Pokemon and improve their stats. Within the live-service gaming paradigm, this is a tried-and-true formula that constantly incentivizes ‘just one more match.’ There are also events, such as daily, timed, and special events, and we’ll no doubt see seasonal events that correspond to real-life seasonal activities in the future, as they have proven popular in games like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Destiny 2.

There are 20 Pokemon to select from at launch, with plenty of potential for more in the future. Attacker, All-Rounder, Defender, Speedster, and Support are the five team roles, and each of them plays quite differently. Pikachu and Gengar both seem very strong, but I like to play as Charizard. Slowbro, Cinderace, Snorlax, Venusaur, Alolan, and Ninetales are all free starting Pokemon. Other Pokemon may be obtained by leveling up your trainer and earning Daily Login prizes. With 900 total Pokemon, there’s plenty of room for growth, and I have a feeling Tencent, Nintendo, and the Pokemon Company are going to make a lot of money off of this one.

The reason for this is the game’s vast array of microtransactions. Given the game’s developer, Tencent, which has a lot of expertise with this kind of game, this isn’t a big surprise. Holowear is pricey, and the clothing for trainers are ridiculously costly, but there will always be gamers eager to take advantage of these chances. Personally, I don’t fall into these financial traps and have successfully avoided microtransactions unless it’s a business I support or a game I want to play for a long time. I’ve avoided all microtransactions so far, and I haven’t seen any difference in my playing time.

From the standpoint of the player, one of the main faults of Pokemon Unite is that not all Pokemon are accessible at first, and you must pay to unlock them. You can acquire the Pokemon through playing, but it will take a long time, and there’s always the option of purchasing your way to arguably better Pokemon. The Held Items, which may enhance and alter stats for Pokemon Unite players, are also for sale, thus there’s a case to be made that you can pay to win in this game. It’s a word that’s frequently used as an insult in games, but it’s difficult to disagree with the facts here.

When considering the game’s faults, it’s important to consider the context in which these defects are presented. You don’t have to engage with the microtransactions if you don’t want to, and the game is free. Pokemon Unite has excellent production value, and you’ll have a great time playing it alone or with a group of pals.

Pokemon Unite is bringing a whole new generation of gamers to MOBA games, and based on the early success, this may be a huge hit for all of the developers and publishers involved. In terms of the combat system, Pokemon needed a jolt, and this does the job wonderfully. With the quantity and variety of Pokemon we have accessible, there is a lot of room for growth. If you possess a Nintendo Switch and are even slightly interested in the Pokemon series, I recommend downloading and playing the game.
