Lost but worth finding

MMOs are known for a few things: a long grind, a strong endgame, and enough of content to keep you occupied for years. Before you start playing, the question you should be asking yourself isn’t always “is this game good?” but rather “is this game worth my life for the next 6 months?” Lost Ark is only one of several games vying for my attention, and it’s difficult to predict how this will pan out in the future. It is just at the beginning of its trip, but it is off to a good start.

The tale is, for the most part, straightforward, but it accomplishes its goal of introducing you to the universe. Arkesia, the major country you must explore, was formed by the Ark, a great item. Sensing this power, Kazeros, Lord of the Abyss, plans to utilize it to break free from his prison and spread mayhem over the earth. Your first objective is to build the ark and then utilize it to restore some form of peace.

While the premise is familiar, the manner it is told is excellent, with varied biomes, engaging side characters, and truly enjoyable activities. Lost Ark is a game that simply keeps getting better and better. When you think you’ve seen all it has to offer, it surprises you with something new. After completing the initial area, you will be guided by a pet and rapport quests as you explore the world. After passing through the first area, you’ll see skill trees for mining, foraging, and woodcutting.

“While the narrative is one we’ve all heard before, the way it’s told is fantastic.”

However, the transition from one key thought to the next might be tedious at times. Some missions seem to have been planned to be considerably longer in the first place. It has charged me with gathering multiples of one item on many occasions, only for the quest to end after one. This is definitely a smart idea since it eliminates a lot of grinding, but it does allude to a game that existed before this one.

The layout of several missions reveals that Lost Ark is a translation and localization of a Korean MMO of the same name. Korean MMOs are notorious for being a massive grind with a lot of things to do. On that topic, opponents provide extremely little experience, thus missions are your best bet for leveling up. Side quests frequently require you to complete a small fetch quest and then finish it further down the map, creating a natural progression system for all quests, even if it gets in the way of the story.

New locations unlock new sorts of missions, and they seem to be purposefully tailored to encourage you to explore in certain ways. You’ll sometimes scout a map and set up quick travel points, only to be whisked away by a side mission to a hidden dungeon just adjacent to your next major goal. It propels you onward, always aiming for the next step in your development.

“Under Amazon Games’ wing, it seems that this will have a large support network behind it, but the community is what will make this game great.”

This philosophy is carried over into the combat and leveling systems. If you’ve ever played Diablo, you’re probably familiar with how combat works. When working from the top down, you depend nearly solely on your mouse and a few keys. You get a handful of strong talents as soon as you choose your character, class, and subclass, making it simple to learn yet difficult to master.

Leveling up is all about enhancing your abilities rather than increasing your numbers. This implies that the moves you prioritize and the gear you add to them will determine your build. You are continually bombarded with fresh new treasure, much like in other Action RPGs, which is utilized to catch up with your current level. It offers a simple mechanism for determining which player has the best numbers, but at some point, you must consider your setup.

Lost Ark never appears to put a lot of thought into who it’s trying to appeal to. It accomplishes enough and adds just enough complexity to keep you going back if you’re searching for a game to play in the background while working away at levels. If you truly want to get into Lost Ark, you may increase your damage, work on your stronghold, and participate in raids to learn all there is to know about the game.

In the end, a strong start isn’t enough for Lost Ark to really take off. Under Amazon Games’ wing, this game is expected to have a large support network behind it, but the community is what will make this game great. Without tribes of people swarming around it, learning every tiny secret, I couldn’t help but feel a bit lonely throughout my time with it. Lost Ark is a fantastic game, but in a year’s time, the community will determine if it’s still wonderful.

Performance

Lost but worth finding

Lost Ark looked excellent and performed well for the most part. Even with an RTX 3070 and a Ryzen 7, it stuttered periodically and suffered from a few of frame drops. Although there is a switch in the settings to switch between quality and performance, accidents sometimes happen. It was never significant enough to detract from the experience, and the game doesn’t require extremely quick inputs, but it’s a shame it wasn’t as consistent as I would have liked.

Accessibility

Lost but worth finding

Lost Ark surprised me by including an accessibility panel that allowed me to modify colors and font sizes, as well as a few other modifications. It has a photosensitivity mode as well as other colorblind options. It isn’t revolutionary, but it is a pleasant addition.

VERDICT ON THE LOST ARK

With so many companies vying for a piece of the lucrative MMO pie, one thing is clear: if you want to thrive, your game must stand apart. If you can merely carve out a market for it, you can make up for a lot of faults. Despite its own identity challenges – with a Diablo-like battle system and enough auxiliary activities to feel complete – Lost Ark is a game I’m excited to watch develop.

KEY MOMENT IN THE GAME

Finding all the additional small systems I hadn’t anticipated.

Good vs. Evil

  • Characters of interest
  • There are several little add-on systems.
  • The universe is enormous.
  • There’s so much to do.
  • a little grueling
  • The setup for the story is a bit simplistic.
