To make it profitable, Cyber Pool breaks the rules of pool a bit too much. Pool sharks will want something more realistic, while those looking for a more casual experience will find the game lacking.

With the neon-drenched debut of Revulo Games’ Cyber Pool, the time-honored game of billiards receives a new look. Should gamers go ready for 40 distinct tables of arcade-style challenges?

Review of the Cyber Pool

For those who have played conventional billiards in a dive club, forget around 80 percent of what you learned because Cyber Pool has its own set of regulations.

Players will still use their cue ball to line up shots as they place balls in pockets, but everything else has changed. They don’t have time for foolishness like a 15-ball object ball rack, hitting the 8-ball last, or deciding between solids and stripes. Rather, each of the 40 levels simply requires players to smash the dispersed balls into one of the forty pockets in any sequence without sinking the cue ball (which results in an automatic game over).

Even the sci-fi theme, though, can’t save this unconventional approach from becoming a little boring. While Cyber Pool is a modern spin on the green-clad classic, it seems more comparable to something like Kirby’s Dream Course than a game of pool. Even in “traditional” mode, players are given three strokes and then an extra stroke for each ball sunk.

The physics engine in Cyber Pool is similarly wacky. For one thing, balls have a horrible propensity of slipping and sliding all over the place. Pockets have a gravitational pull of their own, sucking up balls like sweets when they come near enough. As a consequence, ricocheting bullets often seem like a fantasy. There’s no need to be concerned; modes like Arcade and the order-based Challenge provide players with a limitless number of strokes.

It’s the same feeling when you’re lining up shots. After rotating in a 360-degree circle, hold down the shoot button until the meter reaches the appropriate power level. However, the game makes this too simple by displaying the trajectory of neighboring balls (even color-coding them) when you go too close. Granted, if you’re filming from afar, this won’t be an issue, but those who are close by will feel as if they’re being spoon fed.

Aside from the aforementioned options, there’s a cooperative game with a buddy, a Race mode in which the first player to place all the balls into the pockets wins, and a Battle mode in which the person with the most balls potted wins. None of them stick out very well from the others, but they are all welcome nevertheless.

To make it profitable, Cyber Pool breaks the rules of pool a bit too much. Pool sharks will want something more realistic, while those looking for a more casual experience will find the game lacking.

The Nintendo Switch was used to play Cyber Pool for this review. The game was downloaded from the internet.

The sixth edition in the LEGO series, Traveller’s Tales, is one of the most expansive LEGO Star Wars experiences to date. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has everything you’d want in a Star Wars game, including over 20 planets from all three trilogies, over 300 unlocked characters, and nine movies to play through, but the LEGO games’ basic design isn’t for everyone.

With the introduction of Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Booster Course Pass, players will be able to go back on the track. This collection’s first wave includes eight tunes from the series’ long history – does this establish a nice pace?

When it comes to traditional platformers, we all know the drill: finish each level and reach the conclusion. What if, on the other hand, the whole game was one massive level?
