Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a first person shooter game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Fox Interactive in 2004. The game is set in the year 2179 and features an action packed plot about a crew of Colonial Marines who end up landing on an alien planet in an attempt to rescue the daughter of one of their members.
The year is 2286. The human race is on the brink of extinction. Our planet has been ravaged by a devastating alien attack. The massive Covenant army has invaded our planet and it is the role of you and your fireteam to defend the city of New Mombasa.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a unique game, not only because it has a unique premise, but because of its unique gameplay. It’s an FPS with a heavy focus on teamwork, where you and a team of three other players are the crew of the ‘Fireteam Elite’ and your goal is to complete various missions on five different planets. It’s a fun take on the genre and easily one of the best co-op FPS games on the market.
For what feels like an eternity, the Aliens franchise has been hit or miss in the gaming industry. Is Aliens: Fireteam Elite a success or a miss for Cold Iron Studios, who have thrown their hat into the ring? Check out our review to learn more.
Review of Aliens: Fireteam Elite
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a co-op third-person survival shooter set in the Aliens world where you must attempt to stay alive. The majority of the game is moving from one defensive post to the next while protecting the region against swarms of attackers. It’s monotonous and exhausting, but is it enjoyable?
You build a marine and get thrown into the hub when you first start. You’ll meet a few more characters here, as well as receive a few narrative tidbits. Unfortunately, the lips of the additional characters do not move, and there are no cutscenes, which is unsettling. Still, if you’re a fan of Aliens, you’ll like the tale. Your first mission is to rescue a doctor from a planetary refinery, since the planet has already been lost. Each mission is just 20-30 minutes long, but the intensity of each battle makes it seem much longer. Overall, the mission will take you around seven to eight hours to complete.
How does it do when it comes to fighting, which is at the heart of the game? To be honest, I’m enjoying it. It’s gratifying to kill the Aliens, and the weapons have a nice bang to them. Because I’m a pyro, I almost always employ flamethrowers. I used it the whole time after unlocking it here, and it was certainly the most lethal weapon against ordinary opponents. When the bullet sponge opponents appeared, I’d have to swap, although such occasions were few and far between. Fans of the flamethrower are invited to visit.
You won’t just be battling standard Aliens in this game, though. They’ve developed spitters, gigantic soldiers, and praetorians that charge at you and explode. The game has a great sense of suspense and appears to know when to throw in the more severe opponents. I can’t tell you how many times a warrior charged us and knocked out one or two of us just as we were about to win. You won’t only be fighting Aliens; you’ll also be up against synthesizers and other foes.
So the basic gameplay loop is enjoyable; how about advancement? Aliens: There are classes and weapons to upgrade, as well as challenge cards, in Fireteam Elite. Our Editor-in-Chief Blaine Smith played the average soldier, who buffed us and had a grenade, while I played the heavy guy with shoulder rockets. Each of them has unique skill improvements, bonuses, and the ability to wield various weapons. Challenge cards make a level much more difficult, but they also give you more rewards and loot. The cards can’t be utilized in survival situations, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
I emphasized suspense and how well the game captures it, but it also captures the Aliens franchise’s mood. You’re always on edge, and you’re always looking behind you. The motion sensor emits a beep and is fully functional. As they die, the Aliens cry and moan. The pulse gun makes the expected noises. You may build up turrets on defense positions to make it seem like you’re in the movie. For Aliens aficionados, the package mixes into something very enjoyable – although there are some major flaws.
The AI buddies are a waste of time. You won’t make it out of the first campaign on your alone; you’ll need players to advance. There are also no checkpoints. If you fail a task towards the finish, you must restart from the beginning. Survival mode is your prize for winning the game, and it currently just includes one level, as far as I can tell. The most serious problem is that you can’t utilize your challenge cards in survival mode. As a result, one of the game’s most valuable assets is rendered worthless in the mode designed to keep you playing for a long time. It seems to be a major omission that jeopardizes the game’s long-term viability.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite accomplishes its goal of allowing players to kill aliens and protect corridors. Any higher expectations can only lead to disappointment.

It seems that the universe is filled with alien races, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. We’re used to being the only intelligent life in the universe, but it turns out we’re not. There is evidence that suggests we’re not alone, and if this were the case, it would certainly be nice to know what they are like and why they’ve abandoned us.
